This bear is a very special member of the Steiff family. He is a replica of an original black bear made in 1912. At the time he was known as a mourning bear as he was made to mourn the lives lost that year on the Titanic. He has since become known just as the Titanic bear. Unusually, his eyes are black but with red rims. This was to signify the crying which took place in mourning. He is made from fairly long black mohair, fully jointed and 32cm tall. He has cream coloured pads.
[An original edition of Titanic sold for almost £100,000 at auction in 2000 and not too long ago on Antiques Roadshow one turned up in Australia and was valued in excess of that figure!!]
The bear has a yellow tag 'Button in Ear' [i.e. not a limited edition].
